Overview

This online course is designed to provide participants with introductory tools to assess and treat the myofascial system of the Upper Quadrant as it pertains to TMJ and headache syndromes.

This evidence-informed lecture will outline how to identify and treat fascial restrictions from the perspective of physiotherapy.

This course is brought to you by the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA). This course was presented on Jan 13, 2022. If you registered for the live webinar or are a member of the Orthopaedic Division, you will have received an email with a coupon code for complimentary, lifetime access to the course.

Please note: During the French presentation we encountered a technical issue with the recording. Closed captions in both English and French have been added to the videos in this course.

Objectives/Objectives du webinar

By the end of this online course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the myofascial system as it pertains to the head and TMJ area.
  • Understand the concepts of assessment and treatment using MMS approach to treatment of headaches and TMJ syndromes.
  • Be aware of the research findings that are relevant to MMS as it applies to TMJ and head pain.

The presenter: Doreen Killens, BSc.PT, FCAMPT, CGIMS

Doreen Killens is an orthopaedic musculoskeletal physiotherapist (FCAMPT) with 43 years of clinical experience, also certified in Intramuscular Stimulation. Her career path led to becoming an instructor, examiner, and ultimately, a chief examiner for the NOD.

Doreen has continued to maintain an on-going clinical practice in Montreal, with a particular interest in the field of headaches and myofascial dysfunction. She is the developer of a fascial approach to Rx from the lens of physiotherapy called Mobilization of the Myofascial System (MMS) (Upper Quadrant, Lower Quadrant and Advanced Integration), courses she teaches across Canada and Europe, both in English and in French. This evidence-informed, clinically reasoned approach for the assessment and treatment of fascial dysfunction can be easily integrated with other manual therapies and the Integrated System Model (Diane Lee and LJ Lee).

Doreen is the author of a textbook called "Mobilizing the Myofascial System - A Clinical Guide to the Assessment and Treatment of Myofascial Dysfunctions", published by Handspring Publishing (2018).

Doreen attended most IFOMPT conferences around the world since 1992, as well as all International Fascia Research Conferences since their inauguration at Harvard in 2007. She is a member of the Fascia Research Society (FRC) and recently participated as part of an expert panel on the development of content validity for Hands-on-Data-Acquisition (HODA), a research project headed by Jo Abbott in the UK.

Doreen est l'auteur d'un livre intitulé "Mobilizing the Myofascial System - A Clinical Guide to the Assessment and Treatment of Myofascial Dysfunctions", publié par Handspring Publishing (2018).

Additional Information/Information Additionnelle:

In the 1980s, the curriculum of courses for the Orthopedic Division was primarily focused on the articular system, as were most manual therapy programs world-wide. While the program is still strongly based in the articular system, it has evolved to include more neuromyofascial concepts for manual therapy as well as the pain sciences.

Recently fascia has become the new ‘buzz’ word in the field of rehabilitation and movement re-education.

Until recently its contribution to musculoskeletal dysfunction had been underestimated.

We know now that fascia plays an important role in health, wellbeing and mobility. It transmits the power of the muscles, communicates with the nervous system and serves as a sense organ. Since the inauguration of the Fascia Research Conference in Harvard in 2007, there has been an explosion of research and new information about the impact that fascia has on musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Many different groups of professionals are now exploring the world of fascia. However, many physiotherapists are still unfamiliar with fascia and continue to think of it as the ‘dead packing material’ that is pushed aside during dissections in order to visualize the ‘important stuff’ like muscles and nerves. Physiotherapists, with their varied skill-set in manual therapy techniques, are well-placed to take on this important tissue.
